The Nepal Police is expediting efforts to bring notorious smuggler and American citizen Ian Baker back to Nepal for trial on charges of wildlife crime. Baker was recently arrested by the Greece Police based on the red corner notice issued by Interpol, upon the recommendation of National Central Bureau, Kathmandu.

According to sources from Nepal Police, all the necessary documents establishing Baker as the prime accused in the case have been submitted to the Greece Police through the diplomatic channel.

The Nepal Police has been working on the Baker case on high priority ever since a large collection of more than 100 sets of body parts such as the skin, fur, skulls and bones, of various endangered animals like tigers, leopards, antelopes and foxes, were seized from his residence in May 2008.

The District Forest Office, Kathmandu, will represent the Government of Nepal in this case. Wildlife crime in Nepal is a punishable offence under the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 1973, with up to 15 years in jail or a fine of up to one million rupees or both.
