Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), which is spearheading the agitation in the hill town of Darjeeling in West Bengal, India, for the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state, has called off the indefinite protest after talks with the state government.

GJM Assistant Coordinator Binay Tamang said that the party decided to roll back the protest programs until September 12 considering the problems being faced by the people. He added that they would have a second meeting with the government in Siliguri on the same day.

Bimal Gurung, the Chairman of the party, said that he was unaware of this new development and asserted that the party will not accept Binay Tamang’s unilateral decision to withdraw the protest programs.

Various groups including the GJM and Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) have been leading the agitation in Darjeeling for almost three months now.
