Bad news for all the football lovers in Nepal!
The upcoming edition of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship will be held in Maldives, not in the Himalayan country.
Earlier, both Maldives and Nepal have submitted the proposals for hosting the Championship.
However, the SAFF Executive Committee today reviewed the proposals and decided to hold the Championship in Maldives.
“SAFF decided to hold the Championship in the Maldives as the COVID-19 situation there is better than ours. Also, it has been long since the Maldives last hosted the Championship,” informed ANFA General Secretary Indraman Tuladhar.
Maldives had hosted the Championship only once in 2008. Whereas the Himalayan nation had hosted the event twice, first in 1997 and next in 2013.
Five South Asian countries, including Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, have confirmed their participation in the Championship. Bhutan is yet to confirm its participation.
The 2021 SAFF Championship is scheduled to be held from October 1-13, 2021.
