Industrial activity in Tarai has taken a hit as the floodwaters inundated various industries in the region.
Around 500 industries in the Morang Industrial Corridor remained shut over the past four days as the floodwaters inundated them. Godown facilities, machinery and offices of the industries were submerged in floods.
A widespread power outage occurred as the Duhabi Grid of Nepal Electricity Authority got flooded, thus halting industrial production in the Corridor.
Even though rainfall has gradually come down, removal of mud and dust from the industries’ premises has become a major challenge.
According to Avinash Bohora, Central Member at Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce & Industries (FNCCI), it will take around 3-4 days for the restoration processes to complete as there is no diesel or petrol to run generators. With the ongoing situation, it’ll take the workers a few more days to reach the job site, added Bohora.
The shutdown of industrial activity is resulting in Rs 20 million per day loss for the Corridor and around 300,000 workers will miss their pay.
