Apart from alarming the Nepali health industry, the coronavirus has also started affecting the country’s trade with China.
With the closure of the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border on January 28, 2020, in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection from China, Nepal’s trade with China has stopped completely.
Hundreds of Nepal-bound containers have been restricted from entry into the country from China following the closure of the Rasuwagadhi crossing point.
According to the Vice-president of Nepal Chamber of Commerce Kamalesh Agrawal, the Nepal-China trade is certain to be impacted as the Nepali market will be witnessing shortage of Chinese goods within a short period.
There will be a serious impact on Nepali market as the trade with China will resume only after the coronavirus outbreak is brought under control, said Kamalesh.
Meanwhile, the price of Chinese garlic has already catapulted in the Nepali domestic market due to the shortage of supply from China following the trade movement restrictions.
A week ago, the price of Chinese garlic was at around NPR 300 per kg in the domestic market. But today, i.e., February 3, 2020, the price is over NPR 600 per kg.
China is one of the major trading partners of Nepal. During the first 5 months of the current FY 2020, Nepal exported goods worth NPR 863 million to China, while imports from China stood at NPR 88.6 million.
