As ordered by the Supreme Court, the National Curriculum Development and Evaluation Council has made mathematics a compulsory subject in Grade 11 and Grade 12.
The Supreme Court had directed the Nepali Government to reconsider the categorization of mathematics as an optional subject.
Earlier, English, Nepali, Social Studies, and Life-Skill Education were mandatory, and the remaining subjects, including mathematics, were optional. But now, with the Council’s decision, mathematics has become a mandatory subject.

A meeting of Council chaired by Education Minister Krishna Gopal Shrestha on Thursday took the decision to make mathematics a compulsory subject in high school.
“The students will still be able to keep mathematics as an optional subject if they are denied maths as compulsory,” said Keshab Prasad Dahal, Director General of the Curriculum Development Centre.
Moreover, the Council has decided to merge Social Studies and Life-Skill Education into one subject.
“In the past, Social Studies and Life-Skill Education were separate subjects. Now, they have been merged into one,” said Dahal.
