Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi is likely to visit Nepal, informed Nepal Foreign Affairs Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali.
Suu Kyi has decided to visit the Himalayan nation after her meeting with President Bidya Devi Bhandari in Myanmar between October 16-20, 2019.
“Suu Kyi said she was keen to visit the country in Nepal’s bid to promote ‘Visit Nepal 2020‘. Therefore, we are making preparations for the same,” said Gyawali while addressing media at the Tribhuvan International Airport after his arrival.
The Foreign Minister added that the President Bhandari’s visit to Myanmar was successful in further strengthening bilateral ties between Nepal and Myanmar. During President Bhandari and Minister Gyawali’s visit to Myanmar, the two country’s representatives signed two bilateral cooperation agreements on tourism and culture.
Both the countries issued a joint statement on October 20, 2019 in view of President Bhandari’s visit to Myanmar stating that ‘the first visit to Myanmar by a head of state of Nepal in close to four decades deepens the bond of friendship and the tradition of high-level interaction between representatives of Nepal and Myanmar.’
“It is also a historic, important milestone in the bilateral relations reflecting the hallmark of the close and friendly ties between the two countries,” reads the joint-statement.
The following points were discussed as part of the Nepal-Myanmar Bilateral talks.
During her visit, President Bhandari also met with her Myanmar counterpart U Win Myint, who visited Nepal in August 2018.
