Chief Justice Cholendra Rana has landed in the crosshairs of civil society leaders and activists. They are demanding an investigation be launched into the head of the judiciary for money laundering and indulgence in illegal activities.

Civil society group Govinda KC and Narayan Wagle approached the Department of Money Laundering Investigation with a complaint that stated their demand for investigation on Sunday.

The Chief Justice has been in hot water for the past few months as he has been accused of unfair practices which endangered judicial independence. The Chief Justice is, however, vehemently against the investigation demand.

    Law

Nepal Bar Association, the primary union body of all Nepali lawyers, has been demanding that the Chief Justice resigns from his post by staging different protests.

Prime Minister Sher Deuba upped the ante by daring the former Nepal King Gyanendra Shah to contest in the general elections if the latter wants to lead the Himalayan nation.

These remarks were delivered at a program organized by Ganeshman Memorial Foundation on Wednesday. The Prime Minister further added that the former King should not go against the democracy and stated that all should go contest in the elections if they wanted to administer Nepal.

The Prime Minister recalled how the former King imprisoned him for advocating democracy. Sher further warned that the King should not destabilize the current system of governance.

    Nepal King Gyanendra

“The republic was brought in by King Gyanendra, not us. I told him I can go against anything but democracy. I was put into prison for that, which enraged the public. I told him to move forward with the electoral process to lead the country. Just because they did not want to go for election, they went against democracy,” said the Prime Minister.

“We have a very good constitution at the moment. Although there are some problems, we will resolve them in a democratic manner.”

The Prime Minister stated the Nepali’s biggest asset is their democracy.

Nepal’s peacekeeping force left for South Sudan on Tuesday after United Nations called them forth. The force, which is the 8th Battalion of Chandannath, is led by Lieutenant Colonel Saroj Rana.

The Directorate of Public Relations and Information, 216 Nepali armed peacekeepers, departed from Kathmandu on Tuesday. The team will be replacing the Gorakh Bahadur Battalions’ 7th battalion.

This peacekeeping mission is being performed as Nepal contributes quite significantly to United Nations missions in various violence-afflicted countries.

Nepal is the second biggest country when it comes to contributing to the peacekeepers. The peacekeepers have been deployed in 43 different regions, and they amassed a lot of experience.

    UN Mission Peacekeeping

With a total strength of 5,229 peacekeepers, which even house 200 women combatants, the Nepali peacekeepers are currently deployed in 12 UN missions.

Nepal has been contributing its efforts for peacekeeping missions despite the COVID-19 wreaking havoc across the world.
