Art company Yantrakala Studios, which operates from both Kathmandu and London, is producing an animated movie titled Majipa: Lakhay to commemorate the visit of the then Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana to Britain around 170 years back.
The movie’s story, penned by veteran cultural expert Satya Mohan Joshi, would focus on the Lakhay cult of the Kathmandu Valley. According to Sanyukta Shrestha, the director of the film, her team would conduct an extensive research over the next couple of years to achieve a realistic portrayal of the socio-cultural situation of 19th century Kathmandu. Popular Nepali artists Manish Shrestha, Priyanka Karki, Sunita Juju and Madan Das Shrestha will provide the movie’s voice over.
The movie’s release is being planned for May 2020 to coincide with author Joshi’s 101st birthday. It is Yantrakala’s second production after Shankhadharaya Bakha, the first animated movie in Nepali language in 2016.
