Support Pours In As Nepal Grapples with Second Wave!

As Nepal struggles to cope with the catastrophic second wave of the pandemic, support from other countries continues to pour in. The USAID sent emergency assistance, while the Spanish Agency provided humanitarian aid. The Chinese Government also extended its support.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has provided emergency medical supplies, including surgical masks, face shields, and gloves, for health care workers to help Nepal combat the surge in cases.

In the past three weeks, USAID has offered a total of USD 15 million to the Himalayan Government to help improve COVID-19 testing, treatment, prevention, and contact tracing.

“This recent assistance, in addition to support over the past 15 months, brings USAID’s total assistance to Nepal for COVID-19 to more than USD 50 million,” reads a statement by USAID.

Likewise, The Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) provided COVID-19 medical supplies, including ventilators, oxygen concentrators, antigen test kits, and PPEs, to Nepal.

“Spanish aid agency @AECID  handed over ventilators, oxygen concentrators, antigen test kits, PPEs, etc., to Hon. Health Minister at TIA. Timely support from #Spain will be valuable in our fight against #COVID19. We thank the Gov and people of Spain for the solidarity,” twitted MoFA of Nepal.

COVID-19 Support to Nepal

On request from the Nepali Embassy in Spain, the Spanish Ministry of Health donated 5 tons of medical supplies worth around 1 million Euros. The supplies include 15 respirators, 10 oxygen concentrators, 144,000 FFP2 face masks, and around 125,000 antigen test kits.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Government has provided 3,500 oxygen cylinders and 10 ventilators to help Nepal fight the second wave. Of them, 2,000 oxygen cylinders and 10 ventilators have already been airlifted to Kathmandu, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

China is also preparing to send another 5 million RMB worth consignment, comprising 40 portable ventilators, 20 automated analyzers, 10 DR machines, 20 portable ultrasound machines, and 30 anesthesia machines, to Nepal by next week.

Apart from the Chinese Government, private organizations in China are also extending their support to Nepal.

Today, the Red Cross Society of China provided 90 oxygen concentrators, 2000 coverall, and 700,000 surgical masks to the Red Cross Society of Nepal.

According to the MoFA, the Chinese Government has also announced another grant assistance of 5 million RMB to Nepal by next month. Under this assistance, medical supplies, including 650 oxygen concentrators, 20,000 oxygen nasal cannulas, and 20,000 oxygen face masks, will be provided to the Himalayan country.

So far, Nepal has recorded 488,645 coronavirus cases and 5,847 deaths. Currently, there are 115,852 active cases and 366,946 recovery cases.
